Canadian inmate calls police 12 hours after Christmas Day escape

Corrections officers discovered Michael Bird was missing shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday

KINGSTON, Ontario — A Canadian inmate who escaped from a minimum-security prison Christmas morning surrendered late that night, calling from a pay phone, police said.

Corrections officers at Pittsburgh Institution near Kingston, Ontario, discovered Michael Bird was missing shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday, the QMI news agency reported. Nearly 12 hours later, he called Kingston police from a payphone and told officers to come and get him.

Bird was arrested and sent to the Quinte Detention Center.
