Ga. inmate escapes, steals ambulance from state prison

Authorities touted the recapture of David Pittman, who is serving a 10-year sentence for aggravated battery, but did not give details of the escape

REIDSVILLE, Ga. — An inmate is back in custody after escaping a state prison, stealing an ambulance and attempting to flee on the interstate.

Around 1 a.m. on Friday morning, David Pittman reportedly stole an ambulance and escaped the prison, driving down the interstate for several hours before Laurens County law enforcement “executed a PIT maneuver,” causing the ambulance to roll into the median, All On Georgia reported.

Pittman was taken into custody and a Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) statement later confirmed the incident.

“The Georgia Department of Corrections announced today the recapture of inmate David Pittman (GDC #1001535804). Pittman absconded from his work detail at the Georgia State Prison Fire Station in Reidsville, Ga., at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 30, using a stolen GDC vehicle. He was recaptured by the Lauren’s County Sheriff’s Department at approximately 3:10 a.m. on I-16 westbound.”
