SHIRLEY, Mass. — Authorities are looking for an inmate they say escaped from MCI Shirley’s minimum security prison at 7:37 a.m. yesterday. The Massachusetts Department of Correction Fugitive Apprehension Unit was notified, as were the state and local police, the DOC said in a statement yesterday.
Tamik Kirkland, 24, of Springfield, was serving a sentence of two-and-a-half to four years for weapon offenses out of Hampden Superior Court. This was his first state incarceration, the DOC said. He was sentenced Nov. 19, 2009 and was eligible for parole Feb. 15, 2012. His release date was Aug. 16, 2013.
According to the DOC, when Kirkland is caught, he will be returned to higher-security custody. The DOC will work with the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office to pursue criminal charges. If Kirkland is convicted of escaping, his sentence could be extended, according to the DOC.
