BANGOR, Maine — A murder suspect who escaped from a Maine psychiatric hospital by climbing over a fence has been captured in a neighboring city after 15 hours on the lam.

State police say 29-year-old William Hall was apprehended while walking down the street late Wednesday morning in Brewer, across the Penobscot River from Bangor. That’s about 2 miles from where he escaped at the Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center.

Deputy Police Chief Peter Arno says Hall was sent to the mental hospital after his June 15 arrest. He is charged with strangling 28-year-old Melvin Abreu on June 9 and throwing his body out a window.

State police and county deputies joined in the search after Hall escaped at 7:40 p.m. Tuesday. Police didn’t know how Hall was able to reach the facility’s fence.
