AYER, Mass. — A 24-year-old former MCI-Shirley inmate, who escaped from the state prison and then allegedly killed a man in Springfield, will be arraigned next week on an escape charge.

Tamik Kirkland is scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 30 in Ayer District Court.

Kirkland escaped April 24 from the minimum-security section of MCI-Shirley, where he was serving a sentence for firearms and drug charges.

He headed to Springfield, where on April 30 he is accused shooting and killing Sheldon Innocent of Wilbraham.

Innocent was one of two men allegedly shot by Kirkland at Bill Brown’s House of Beauty in Springfield. Innocent was a bystander.

Springfield police Officer Raul Gonzalez, State Trooper Stephen Gregorczyk and barbershop owner Darryl King were shot and wounded.

It appears King, the barbershop owner who was shot and wounded, may have been known to Kirkland.

A preliminary investigation showed Kirkland fled the prison in Shirley a day after his mother was injured in a shooting.
