A convicted sex offender escaped Norway’s Bastoy Prison using a surfboard and a shovel, according to officials.
The low-security prison is known for its leniency, with no fences surrounding the picturesque island. Inmates are free to farm, bike, and use the surrounding beaches, according to Reuters.
The inmate, whose name has not been released, was not considered a threat to the public, according to reports.
He went missing during the night, and a surfboard and shovel belonging to the prison were found on the shore of the mainland about two miles away.
“It sounds spectacular when it happens this way. But if it hadn’t been a surfboard, it could have been something else. It’s not so hard to find a floating device of some sort on the island,” prison chief Tom Eberhardt told Reuters.
When escapees of the island are caught, it’s unlikely they are allowed to return to the island.
