SALT LAKE CITY — Utah lawmakers tasked with choosing a new site for a state prison say they could make their selection next week.
Layton Republican Sen. Jerry Stevenson said Tuesday that the Prison Relocation Commission could choose one of four sites at a meeting scheduled for Aug 11. Lawmakers had previously delayed the vote to review technical details.
After the commission recommends a site, Utah Gov. Gary Herbert is expected to call lawmakers into a special session to approve the move.
The four locations are in Salt Lake City, Grantsville, Eagle Mountain and Fairfield. The new prison would replace the current facility in the Salt Lake City suburb of Draper.
Proponents of the move say the prison needs additional space and updates and is taking up valuable land near high-tech companies, but opponents want it to stay.
