GRAND FORKS, N.D. — The Ramsey County Commission has approved an electronic monitoring program for low-risk offenders.

The program, proposed by Northeast District Judge Lee Christofferson, allows low-risk offenders to serve their sentences at home. They are fitted with electronic devices with GPS that allows law enforcement to monitor their whereabouts at all times, according to a report in the Devils Lake Journal.

The program should save the county some money, he said. As an example, he said if an inmate requires medical care while in custody, the county pays the cost. However, if the inmate is at home, that individual is responsible for his or her own medical costs.

Electronic monitoring costs the county approximately $20 a day. Incarceration in the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center costs $70 a day. For juveniles to be incarcerated in Grand Forks costs upwards of $175 a day.
