‘Behind the Wall’ documentary highlights toll of prison work on correctional officers

The documentary gives voice to correctional officers, exposing the physical and mental toll of working behind prison walls and calling for wellness solutions

A new 21-minute documentary, “Behind the Wall,” has been released on YouTube, spotlighting a critical issue in America’s jails and prisons that often goes unaddressed: the toll of trauma on correctional officers.

While discussions on criminal justice reform frequently focus on inmates, Behind the Wall explores the human cost for those tasked with maintaining order in a system that can be dehumanizing for everyone inside. Through the voices of correctional officers, the film reveals how the work impacts their physical and mental health, their families, and their communities — and calls for wellness programs dedicated to supporting corrections staff.

The film was co-created by Dr. Karen Lischinsky, founder of the CARE Program and Ring Resiliency Boxing Program, and Officer Bill Farrell of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department in Boston, who also serves as an EAP/peer support officer. Both bring decades of experience in trauma recovery, restorative justice, and officer wellness.

Produced by Leslie Neale of Chance Films and Paul Westmacott of Paradigm Pictures, “Behind the Wall” continues a body of documentary work recognized globally for bringing attention to the realities of prisons and the urgent need for systemic change.
