BOISE, Idaho — An inmate at Idaho’s highest-security prison assaulted a 56-year-old correctional corporal, who had to be hospitalized afterward, the state Department of Correction said.

Robert D. Pompa assaulted the corporal on Saturday at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution, the department said Sunday night. The institution is part of the state’s prison complex south of Boise.

The corporal, who was not identified, was taken to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise and was still hospitalized Sunday night in stable condition, the department said.

The prison’s staff immediately secured the crime scene with help from officers from the nearby Idaho State Correctional Institution and the Idaho State Correctional Center, and the prison returned to normal status Sunday, the department said.

Pompa is serving a sentence of at least 27 years on a conviction of murder [as well as] battery on a correctional officer or jailer in Madison County in East Idaho, plus convictions for burglary, aggravated battery and unlawful discharge of a weapon in Bannock County.

State police are investigating the incident, the department said. In response to emailed questions from the Idaho Statesman, a spokesperson said Monday that the department had no additional information available immediately to share.
