POTTSVILLE, Pa. — An inmate at State Correctional Institution-Frackville has been charged with assault by a prisoner after police say he attacked a correctional officer.

State police charged Michael Angel Rodriguez, 29, after he reportedly assaulted the officer Nov. 21 by kicking him in the knee multiple times.

Police said the incident began when Rodriguez refused to enter his cell because his bed sheets were confiscated during a cell investigation.

Rodriguez became non-compliant and had to be assisted to the ground, police said. He was then transported via a restraining chair to the medical unit for evaluation.

While in the unit, the correctional officer was tasked with photographing Rodriguez for documentation purposes. Rodriguez resisted being photographed, and struck the officer in the knee three times, causing injuries, according to police.

Rodriguez faces felony counts of assault by a prisoner of an employee and aggravated assault. He was also charged with misdemeanors of simple assault and reckless endangerment.
