MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Department of Corrections Commissioner Kim Thomas resigned today, and is beginning the process of retirement.

AL.com reports that Air Force Col. Jefferson S. Dunn will take over as commissioner when he retires from the Air Force in March.

“Colonel Jeff Dunn is a proven leader with a strong record of military service,” Gov. Robert Bentley said in a statement. “He brings a unique experience to the Department of Corrections and I look forward to Colonel Dunn joining my team to continue the prison reforms we have begun and make the department stronger for inmates and staff.”

Billy Sharp will be the interim commissioner until Dunn takes over in March.
