SAN MATEO, Calif. — A man serving a life term for robbing and killing a taxi driver in San Mateo in 1993 was slain by his cellmate at California State Prison-Sacramento in Folsom, authorities said.

A prison spokesman said Anthony Steadham, 38, was found injured in his cell at 3:10 a.m. Saturday, and pronounced dead less than two hours later at a hospital.

Officials said the killer was his cellmate, Maurice Woodson, 43, who entered the prison system in April to serve a 46-year sentence for attempted murder and assault.

Steadham was convicted in 1997 of murdering Thomas Simones, a 43-year-old cab driver from San Jose, during an armed-robbery spree.
