ELMIRA, N.y. – Corrections officers working at the recently locked down Elmira Correction Facility are demanding safer working conditions, speaking out after a series of dangerous incidents reported at the prison last month.
The union representing them, New York State Correctional Officer and Police Benevolent Association, told Central NY that this is the second lockdown the facility has seen in the last four months. Previous budget cuts and prison closures are the reason for spike in violence.
The union is demanding that the state needs to consider not closing any more prisons, as proposed in Gov. Cuomo’s budget, since the Elmira Correctional Facility is already over capacity.
In response, the New York State Department of Corrections claims there is no overcrowding issue.
