LAKE COUNTY, Ill. — Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran was ready to check himself into his own jail later this week as a “show of faith” in his embattled corrections personnel. But on Monday, he canceled the plan because of what his spokesman described as a previously unidentified scheduling conflict.
Curran wanted to “highlight the realities of the exceptional treatment of the inmates at his jail,” as well as his crew’s dedication in light of recent unfavorable publicity, according to Friday’s news release.
Two inmates have died since January.
Lyvita Gomes, 52, a native of India, showed signs of mental illness before she launched a hunger strike and died Jan. 3, several days after being hospitalized.
