ELKO, Nev. — The Elko County Jail has been cited for state health code violations, including a lack of adequate toilets and shower facilities for female inmates. Most women at the jail have been transferred to Eureka and Lander counties while the deficiencies are addressed, Elko County sheriff’s officials said.
Health inspectors cited the jail for faulty water pressure in one bathroom, a damaged shower wall in another cell block and minor issues in the facility’s kitchen. The women-to-toilet ratio of 16-to-1 was twice as high as it should be, they said.
County commissioners approved $1 million in their 2013 budget to renovate the jail, and the latest plans include additional beds and toilets for women. It currently has room for 32 female inmates. The Nevada State Health Division notified the sheriff of the violations on April 4 and the county started moving women out of the jail about two weeks ago.
