TOPEKA, Kan. — Three juveniles at the Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex purposefully damaged property in their unit over the weekend, according to a news release.

The Kansas Department of Corrections announced in a news release Monday that three juvenile offenders housed at the juvenile correctional complex broke desk drawers, damaged electronic equipment, threw supplies and cracked three windows Saturday evening.

According to the release, the juveniles failed to follow staff instructions and then escalated their behavior by tearing up an officer’s workstation. The incident began around 6:50 p.m. and lasted until about 7:55 p.m.

The release stated that upon a verbal direction from the KJCC superintendent, the three juveniles ended the incident by sitting down and waiting for staff to escort them out of the unit. No force was used and there were no injuries, according to the release.

An investigation is underway by KDOC’s Enforcement, Apprehension and Investigation Unit to determine the cause of the disturbance, and recommendations to the Shawnee County District Attorney on possible charges are expected this week, the release stated.
