KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A proposed bill would make it a felony for inmates to expose corrections officers to bodily fluids or human waste.

Sheriff Richard Fuller told WHTC that this is a step closer to protecting corrections staff from the dangers they face inside jails and prisons.

“It’s an intentional exposure, when somebody will do something intentionally inside a cell to expose an officer,” Fuller said.

He pushed lawmakers to pass the bill Tuesday during a presentation to the House Committee on Law and Justice, the news station reported.

“It is something that most of that board was in favor of,” he said. “There was some opposition, but, overall, it looked like most of that board understood what we were trying to explain.”
