NEWARK — A group of Essex County corrections officers at the juvenile detention center have sued their employer, claiming they are owed thousands of dollars in unpaid overtime wages.

The suit alleges that the corrections officers were systematically docked pay by a time clock system that “rounded off” time worked before and after an employee’s scheduled hours.

The civil suit against the county was filed in U.S. District Court in Newark on Friday, according to attorney Andrew Glenn.

Two veteran corrections officers, Dwayne Davis and Jeda Austin, were paid “for some of their overtime hours” but not paid for all overtime hours worked at the Essex County Juvenile Detention Center in Newark, the suit alleges.

Davis and Austin are named the lead plaintiffs in a collective action complaint and as of today, 25 county corrections have joined, Glenn said. He said each employee is owed up to $10,000 in unpaid overtime for the past three years.
