NEW YORK — Four Rikers inmates attempted to escape from solitary by ripping a porcelain toilet out of the floor and using it to smash through cinderblock walls of five cells.
According to the NY Daily News, the inmates crawled through the holes created in the walls and used bricks from the damage to threaten the supervising corrections officer.
The officer immediately left, calling for back up. Top supervisors were able to convince the inmates to return to different cells. The escape attempted caused $6,000 in damage.
“The officers and captain on post showed remarkable professionalism and restraint and no force was necessary to deal with this incident,” said acting Correction Department commissioner Mark Cranston.
