HERSHEY, Pa. — Twelve people had minor injuries after the Department of Corrections bus on which they were traveling Friday morning crashed on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Pennsylvania State Police this afternoon said a prison guard and 11 inmates were taken to Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center with minor injuries.

A Penn State Health spokeswoman originally said six inmates were treated for non life-threatening injuries, but the hospital expected more to arrive.

The bus crashed around 9 a.m. on Interstate 76 eastbound at mile marker 258.5, between exit 247 to Harrisburg and Lebanon- Lancaster. All eastbound lanes were blocked for part of the morning, but the scene has since been cleared.

The cause of the crash remains unclear.

Department of Corrections spokeswoman Maria Bivens said all inmates are accounted for. She said she could not offer further comment because of security reasons. A second bus arrived to transport the inmates after the crash.
