FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A Florida deputy died weeks after he experienced a medical episode and collapsed outside of a jail.
WPLG reports that Deputy Michael Ryan collapsed on Dec. 15 at the parking lot of the Broward County Jail when he experienced a medical episode. He later died on New Year’s Eve.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office announced Ryan’s death on Twitter on Tuesday and said the deputy was surrounded by his family at the time of his death.

“During his time of service, he was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation and was spoken highly of during his evaluations. RIP, Deputy Ryan, the BSO family will miss you,” the post read.
The incident happened while a man retrieving his belongings was told to return the knife he had in his possession. Authorities didn’t say whether Ryan was escorting the man outside of the jail.
Fort Lauderdale police said that one person was taken into custody, but it’s unclear whether that person will face charges for anything.
A cause of death has not been publicly released.
