LOS LUNAS, NM — Three corrections officers were injured due to an altercation with four drunken inmates in a Los Lunas, New Mexico prison.
One officer was injured in the shoulder, another required stitches above the eye and the third was treated for bruising and swelling, though none of the injuries were life threatening, according to ABQ Journal.
The brawl took place in a hallway leading to the prison’s kitchen. It’s believed that the inmates were drunk off of “hooch” while working in the kitchen, though its still unclear how the inmates were able to hide food and allow it to ferment.
The fight began when an inmate who was bringing a food tray back from another part of the facility whistled at a female employee, prompting an officer to confront him about his behavior. A second inmate approached the officer and struck him in both the stomach and face.
A second officer attempted to defend his coworker, and eventually the conflict was brought under control. Nine other inmates stood peacefully against one wall while corrections officers were dealing with the confrontation.
