VICTORIA COUNTY, Texas — Seven COs were injured in an inmate attack at the Victoria County Jail.

Officials told the Victoria Advocate that Tyler Shelton, 19, attacked the officers Friday after they stopped him from attempting suicide with a noose made from his shirt.

“In the struggle that ensued, Mr. Shelton violently assaulted and injured seven VCSO jailers before he could be restrained,” Sheriff T. Michael O’Connor said in a news release.

Four COs and Shelton were transported to the hospital for treatment. Three officers were treated on the scene. All officers have been released from the hospital.

A report said that upon returning from the hospital, Shelton attacked another officer. The attacks prompted a lockdown of the jail. It has since been lifted.

Shelton was charged with seven counts of aggravated assault of a public servant and assault of a public servant. He was initially jailed on a charge of burglary of a habitation.
