Brawl breaks out at Maine jail over a magazine, one officer injured

Was punched in the mouth by an inmate, required stitches

PORTLAND, Maine — A corrections officer was injured during an inmate brawl at the Cumberland County Jail that started over a magazine, the county sheriff’s office announced late Wednesday.

The incident, which took place at 11:15 a.m. on May 30, occurred in one of the jail’s medium security units. According to the sheriff’s office announcement, “several officers” responded to a call for assistance in the unit and “found fights in progress.”

“Officers quickly broke up the altercations that lasted for only a few minutes,” the county sheriff’s office statement read, in part. “During the melee, Officer Tyrone Leslie was punched in the mouth by an inmate. His injury required stitches. The fight started between two inmates over a magazine and escalated to include 8-10 inmates.”

The incident is still under investigation, according the sheriff’s office, and charges may be filed against the inmate who injured Leslie.
