FRESNO, Calif. — A Fresno County jail inmate who was involved in a police shooting nearly two months ago is now facing new felony charges after he allegedly stabbed a correctional officer with a “jail-made weapon” Saturday, sheriff’s Lt. Joe Smith said.
Smith said an officer was conducting a cell check around 3:30 p.m. when Daniel Martin Telles, 27, reached out from his cell and stabbed the officer behind his left ear.
Telles was quickly taken down and the officer was transported to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment, but did not need stitches, Smith said. The officer began working in the jail in March, the sheriff’s office said.
Telles has now been moved away from the jail’s general population and is pending evaluation, Smith said. “He’s a dangerous inmate,” Smith added.
In February, Fresno police arrested Telles, a known Bulldog gang member, after he allegedly pointed a handgun at two people in a car near Maple and Illinois avenues in southeast Fresno, and then refused to drop the gun when he was confronted by officers, who then opened fire.
The injured correctional officer has returned to the the jail.
Fresno police Chief Jerry Dyer briefed the media Feb. 26, 2016, after Fresno police fired shots at a weapons suspect who they say refused to drop a handgun. The suspect, Daniel Telles, allegedly pointed a gun at two occupants of a car, then was confronted.
Telles is facing felony assault charges and his bail is set at $595,000, according to jail records.
The sheriff’s office said Telles has been in and out of the jail numerous times dating back to 2006.
