STERLING, Colo. — A correctional officer is recovering after an inmate assaulted the officer with a weapon.

The DOC told the Journal-Advocate that Angelo Trujillo, 28, allegedly assaulted an officer with a weapon Tuesday. The publication inquired about reports of a stabbing at Sterling Correctional Facility, but the DOC did not specify what type of weapon was used in the assault.

A statement said the CO was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and the assault was “quickly stopped by first responders.”

Officials said despite Trujillo still being listed as incarcerated at Sterling Correctional Facility, the inmate was transferred to another facility pending investigation.

“The Colorado Department of Corrections has a zero tolerance policy for violence in our facilities,” DOC Executive Director Rick Raemisch said in a statement. “Our state’s involvement in the Interstate Compact Agreement allows us to ensure our staff are protected from future assaults, and they will be moved out of this state. We will seek the strictest penalty.”
