MIAMI SPRINGS, Fla. — A Florida State corrections officer is recovering in the hospital after colliding with a driver who fled the scene on foot after the crash.
The accident happened Tuesday morning at the intersection of Northwest 36th Street and Miller Drive. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said the corrections officer was trapped in his vehicle for nearly 20 minutes before being freed and rushed to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
“The person that was left behind was trapped in the driver’s seat of the vehicle behind us,” said Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Capt. Juan Garrandes. “He’s a corrections officer, not sure what facility he worked for.” Garrandes added, “He was unable to get his legs out from underneath the dashboard, so we had to cut the door a little bit to be able to free him and move him from the passenger seat.”
