ATLANTA — A woman was able to escape a kidnapping Thursday when an off-duty Fulton County jail sergeant fired at a gunman, according to Channel 2 Action News.

No one was hit in the shooting, which occurred at a gas station on Northside Drive and Joseph E. Boone Boulevard in northwest Atlanta, according to the news station.

Gene Barbara, a security guard who witnessed the incident heading home from work, told Channel 2 he noticed a struggle going on inside a car at the gas station.

The woman and two other men were inside the car, Barbara said.

The jail official intervened, and Barbara saw the car take off and the woman and another man get out, Barbara said.

It is not clear if any arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

The GBI is investigating, according to Channel 2.

The agency is conducting a use of force investigation at the request of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, according to a tweet from spokesman Nelly Miles. However, she would not say if that investigation was related to the foiled kidnapping.

No other details were released.

So far, there have been 74 officer-involved shootings in Georgia this year, according to the GBI. In 2016, the agency investigated 77 officer-involved shootings.
