BENTON HARBOR, Mich. — Hundreds of law enforcement officers have attended a celebration of life service for one of two bailiffs slain after an inmate tried to escape from a southwestern Michigan courthouse.

MLive.com reports that about 1,500 people gathered Friday at Lake Michigan College’s Mendel Center in Benton Harbor to remember 61-year-old Joseph Zangaro.

Zangaro and 63-year-old Ronald Kienzle were killed Monday in Berrien County Circuit Court in St. Joseph. Both were retired police officers.

A handcuffed Larry Darnell Gordon disarmed Deputy James Atterberry Jr. during a fight and shot him. Zangaro and Kienzle were shot in a public hallway.

A woman also was shot in the arm. Hostages were briefly taken before Gordon was fatally shot by other bailiffs.

Services will be held Monday at the Mendel Center for Kienzle.
