SOMERSET, Pa. — A Pennsylvania inmate was arraigned in the brutal assault of a corrections officer who was sent to a hospital with a brain bleed.
The Tribune-Democrat reports that 30-year-old Canie Griffith was arraigned Tuesday and faces several charges, including aggravated assault. Authorities said Griffith struck Officer Mark Bevec three times with a Master Lock padlock during the May 18 attack.
Troopers said Bevec was working alone and sitting at his control desk when Griffith walked up and struck the officer in the head and the left arm. Bevec radioed for help as he fled to the lobby and was taken to the hospital.
Bevec suffered a brain bleed and a puncture wound to his left arm. The officer reportedly told troopers that he had previous problems with Griffith.
The assault forced a lockdown at the prison for several days. Griffith is being held at a different facility as he awaits preliminary hearing.
The inmate had been serving a lengthy sentence after pleading guilty to robbery and other crimes in 2016.
