SMYRNA, Del. — A corrections officer at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center was punched in the face by an inmate Tuesday during morning showers.

According to WDEL, the inmates were taking their morning showers when one of them became combative with COs.

“When ordered into his cell, the inmate threw his belongings into the cell and said, ‘I’m taking one of you with me,’” union president Geoff Klopp said in a statement.

The inmate punched the officer in the face and fought other COs until backup arrived.

Officials said the inmate caused bruising and lacerations to the officer’s face.

The assault comes days after inmates took control of the facility, held staffers hostage and killed Sgt. Steven Floyd.

Both incidents are under investigation.
