Inmate dead, 2 COs hurt in altercation at Ohio prison

Two officers were trying to remove the inmate from his cell when he became combative

ORIENT, Ohio — An inmate has died and two corrections officers were injured during an altercation at a prison south of Columbus.

The inmate, Michael A. McDaniel, 55, of Columbus, died at a hospital Saturday after initially refusing medical treatment, according to the Columbus Dispatch. The two female officers involved were treated at hospitals and released for unspecified injuries.

ABC 6 reports the two officers were trying to remove McDaniel from his cell Saturday afternoon at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient when he became combative.

After initially refusing medical attention at the prison, McDaniel later collapsed, the Dayton Daily News reports. He was pronounced dead at Mount Caramel Hospital in Grove City.

The Dispatch reports McDaniel arrived at the prison on Jan. 26 after pleading guilty in Franklin County to aggravated assault. He had received a 16-month sentence.

Reports say the incident is being investigate by the State Highway Patrol.
