MANNINGTON TWP. — Already convicted of murder, a Salem County inmate is now facing new charges for beating a corrections officer this weekend, authorities said Sunday.
Jonathan P. Thomas has been charged with aggravated assault after viciously attacking Officer Michael L. Shimp at the Salem County Correctional Facility, officials said.
The incident took place Saturday around 2:25 p.m. when Thomas approached Shimp inside a confined area in the jail and began punching the officer in the head and face, according to authorities.
Shimp, 51, was initially aided by the jail’s nursing staff and then taken to Christiana Hospital in Newark, Del., for treatment of a broken nose and lacerations and abrasions to his head and face, according to Salem County Sheriff Chuck Miller.
Shimp was released from the hospital Sunday morning and is now back home recuperating, the sheriff said.
