CORALVILLE, Iowa — A corrections officer sustained minor injuries after he was assaulted by an inmate in a wheelchair.
The Gazette reports that on Thursday, a CO placed handcuffs on the inmate, who’s confined to a wheelchair, and entered a cell to assist in moving him. The inmate then struck the officer on the side of his head with both fists and handcuffs.
The Iowa Department of Corrections said the inmate was ““immediately restrained with the assistance of another officer.” The injured officer was treated by medical staff and was found to have bruising and scratches from the attack.
The officer began experiencing headaches after continuing his duties and was escorted to a hospital as a precautionary measure.
The incident remains under investigation.
