MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. — A deputy escorting an inmate during a court hearing on Monday was bitten on the wrist.
MLive reports that the deputy was overseeing a routine attorney-client meeting in the courtroom of Circuit Court Judge Timothy G. Hicks when it happened.
The inmate was in court for a probation violation when she started to yell at her attorney. The deputy moved to intervene, and that was when she bit him.
“After she was getting loud with her attorney, she was asked to step into the jury box and failed to follow instructions. She was going to walk away. He put his hand on her shoulder before she stood up and as soon as her hand hit her shoulder, she turned around abruptly and bit him on the wrist,” said Todd Gilchrist, Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office Interim Jail Administrator.
The inmate’s teeth pierced the deputy’s skin and drew blood.
The deputy is currently undergoing blood tests to find out if the inmate has infected him with anything.
“He’s dealing with a great deal of personal stress in his life over this,” Gilchrist said. “He won’t know for seven to 10 days minimum before the tests come back.”
A blood draw was done on the inmate within 24 hours, and if she does come back positive with anything, the deputy will have go through a minimum six-month regimen of testing to make sure he didn’t contract anything.
The woman has been charged with resisting arrest and obstructing police causing injury. Even after she bit the officer, more deputies intervened and took her back to the jail where she continued to resist.
