LINCOLN, Neb. — A Tecumseh State Prison CO was repeatedly punched and kicked by an inmate in the fifth assault on officers in the past 10 days.
The inmate approached the officer in the dining hall Monday and began repeatedly punching the CO in the face, a DOC Facebook post said. When the officer fell to the ground, the inmate kicked the officer in the face.
When other officers came to intervene, the inmate fled but was quickly restrained and placed in restrictive housing. The officer is being treated for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. An investigation is ongoing.
“NDCS staff members are brave, dedicated professionals who knowingly put themselves in harm’s way,” Director Scott R. Frakes said in a statement. “Prison is a dangerous place, but violence to our staff members will not be tolerated. The facility is managing the level of threat with appropriately controlled movement.”
According to the Omaha World-Herald, there have been at least 11 assaults resulting in serious injury in the past two months.
