TRENTON, N.J. — A corrections officer was assaulted by an inmate at Garden State Youth Correctional Facility this week.
Union officials told NJ.com that CO Justin Straub was performing a check at the facility when the inmate punched Straub in the face multiple times and knocked him to the ground. While on the ground, the inmate allegedly “continued the assault and repeatedly kicked the officer in the head.”
Along with other officers, CO William Solan responded as backup and was injured during the incident. According to Insider NJ, medical reports are not available due to an ongoing investigation.
The attack comes days before Gov. Chris Christie is expected to sign a bill giving COs the same benefits as police officers when attacked on-duty.
