GLOUCESTER COUNTY — When every work day means putting your safety in the hands of others, colleagues soon become like siblings.
First impressions give way to in-depth knowledge of a co-worker’s strengths and weaknesses, ups and downs, and all that’s precious to him.
So when 35-year-old Gloucester County Corrections Officer Agostino “Gus” Fare died suddenly on Wednesday while on duty, fellow officers were cruelly reminded of how much he’d come to mean to them.
County officials said they do not yet know how Fare, the father of two girls, died. County spokeswoman Debra Sellitto said he was driving a corrections van on Route 77 in Bridgeton to pick up a prisoner when he lost consciousness.
Corrections Officer Ricks, who was with him, was able to turn off the ignition and pull the van to the side of the road, Sellitto said.
Ricks called for assistance and flagged down help, she continued, before beginning CPR. Fare was taken by ambulance to Inspira South Jersey Medical Center before being declared deceased.
