SIOUX FALLS, S.C. — The assault on a correctional officer in Sioux Falls during the weekend was one of the most vicious attacks on an officer within the state prison system since the murder of officer Ron Johnson two years ago.

Carlos Green, a maximum security inmate with a history of assaultive behavior both in and outside the walls of prisons and jails, allegedly punched Cpl. Zane Mathis several times in the head Saturday night. Green broke Mathis’ jaw and left his face with several cuts and lacerations.

Green has yet to be charged with a crime for the attack, which Division of Criminal Investigation spokeswoman Sara Rabern said is under investigation. The Department of Corrections and Division of Criminal Investigation have declined to give details of the circumstances surrounding the assault, with the DOC saying only that Green was handcuffed by several officers following the attack and that he remains in disciplinary segregation.
