NEWPORT, Vt. — Authorities say two Vermont prison inmates using a sharp object have taken a corrections officer hostage for more than two hours.

They say Northern State Correctional Facility inmates Mehmed Devac and Leroy Hughes threatened the CO and issued a list of demands on Thursday. A state Department of Corrections special response team has helped resolve the hostage situation in Newport with everyone accounted for and no injuries reported.

Authorities say the 22-year-old Devac is serving time for assault, aggravated assault and robbery with injury to a victim. They say the 32-year-old Hughes was convicted of grand larceny, assault and armed robbery.

There’s no word on what new charges the inmates could face.

A public defender who represents inmates says he doesn’t know what the demands were and his office is investigating.
