GROVELAND, N.Y. — A corrections officer is recovering after being attacked by two inmates while conducting a routine search of an inmate’s dorm cubicle.
The Livingston County-News reports that the CO was searching an inmate’s living area when the prisoner entered the area and was told to leave. After failing to follow the officer’s orders, the inmate, unprovoked, allegedly punched the officer in the face.
During the struggle, a second inmate entered the area and reportedly began to attack the officer as well, striking him several times in the face and head. A second CO came to his assistance and, with additional help from staff, was able to subdue the second attacking inmate.
The officer who was initially attacked was eventually able to restrain the first attacking inmate. The officer was transported to a hospital, where he received treatment for lacerations to his chest and a bloody nose and lip. Two other COs were also treated for minor injuries.
“It is unfortunate as we come to the end of 2017 that this latest attack symbolizes what our members have faced for the past several years across the state in our prisons — a violent and aggressive inmate who shows no reluctance to attacking staff at any given time,” NYSCOPBA Western Region Vice President Joe Miano said.
All three officers did not return to duty.
The inmates will face internal disciplinary charges in addition to criminal charges.
