HOLMESBURG, Pa. – A special investigative team is still probing the attack that occurred at the Philadelphia Correctional Center on Monday, but some information has been released.

FOX News reports that the man responsible for the attack has been arrested and charges are in the process of being filed.

“In this case, this individual was a habitual offender,” said Lou Giorla, prison commissioner.

The inmate named in the attack is Fred Avery Jr., who has been incarcerated since 2013 for aggravated assault and making terroristic threats.

Avery was apparently angry at officers for stopping a fight he was in and lunged at them with a sharpened screw.

“Apparently he had a homemade weapon secreted in his cell that he then retrieved,” Giorla said. “He stabbed the sergeant in the head and when the officer tried to wrestle him away from the sergeant, he attacked the officer.”

The officer was stabbed in the head six times, and the third officer was stabbed in the left hand when he attempted to intercede.

The officer stabbed in the hand was released from the hospital, while the other two remain hospitalized in stable condition.

“They sustained injuries, but they were non-life-threatening,” Giorla said. “We got lucky today.”
