LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas corrections officer who was found unconscious on duty died following an “incident” with an inmate, a city official said.
On July 19, 51-year-old Officer Kyle Eng was found unconscious at the Las Vegas Detention Center while on duty, KVVU-TV reported. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
According to a Facebook post from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Eng was found unconscious after he was “involved in a fight with an inmate.” The Monday post was later edited to remove the reference to the inmate fight.
Jace Radke, city of Las Vegas spokesperson, released a statement later Monday confirming that Eng was “involved with a minor incident with an inmate” before he was taken to the hospital.
“However, we cannot confirm whether or not this incident had anything to do with the cause of death, which is yet to be fully determined by the Clark County Coroner’s Office,” Radke said.
Hundreds gathered for Eng’s funeral Monday to remember the fallen officer. His family remembered him as a “strong person” who would “help others anyway he could.”
