CRANSTON, R.I. — A corrections officer suffered serious injuries after being violently assaulted by an inmate in Rhode Island.

According to WJAR, inmate Darren Frappier, 22, was arraigned Thursday on felony assault on a CO and disorderly conduct after attacking an officer on Wednesday at the Adult Correctional Institution. The officer suffered a broken eye socket, nose and shoulder injury as a result of the attack.

Richard Ferruccio, president of the R.I. Brotherhood of Correctional Officers, said Frappier attacked the officer as he was attempting to close the inmate’s cell.

“As the officer went to push the door closed, I understand the inmate put his foot in the door to stop it and he immediately assaulted the officer, punching him in the face,” he said.

Ferruccio told WPRI that the injured officer was fortunate that a new CO in training was with him at the time of the attack. The new CO jumped in to stop the attack on the injured officer, who Ferruccio said typically works alone all day in a cell block with about 100 inmates.

The injured officer was taken to a hospital and was later released.

Frappier, 22, was returned to the ACI, where he had been serving a 30-day sentence for domestic assault, Ferruccio said. The inmate has been placed in disciplinary confinement for the next 30 days.

“He’s definitely facing felony charges that could land him up to five years in prison,” Ferruccio added.

The Rhode Island State Police are investigating the attack.
