ST CLOUD — A sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed inside a Minnesota hospital Sunday morning by a man suspect in a “domestic-related incident.”
Danny Hammond, 50, was being monitored by Aitkin County Sheriff’s Deputy Steven Sandberg, 50, at St. Cloud Hospital when a struggle ensued, according to NBC News.
Hammond allegedly grabbed Sandberg’s gun during the struggle and shot him, killing him.
Hospital security used a TASER to subdue Hammond, who reportedly became unresponsive and also died, though the cause of his death has not been determined. It is unclear what Hammond was being treated for at the hospital or when he was admitted.
Sandberg, 60, was married with one daughter and had been an investigator with the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Department since 1991, according to Aitkin County Sheriff Scott Turner.
