SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Two inmates charged in an attack that left a corrections employee hospitalized for three days made their first court appearance Thursday.
During their arraignment, Carlos Green, 28, and Garrett Dumarce, 24, pleaded not guilty to the felony charges.
The two inmates were assigned a jury trial to begin Sept. 9.
A maximum-security inmate, Green is accused of punching Cpl. Zane Mathis several times, breaking his jaw and causing cuts to his face. He is being charged with aggravated assault of a corrections employee as a habitual offender and could face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
The 28-year-old already was serving a 35-year sentence for aggravated assault, a consecutive five-year sentence for eluding police and a consecutive two-year sentence for sliming, all from Brown County.
