KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The body of a teenager who escaped from Blount County’s juvenile detention facility on Friday was found early Saturday morning on the Maryville greenway, the victim of an apparent suicide, according to authorities.

Around 7:30 p.m. Friday, Joseph Dillon French, 16, of Friendsville, attacked a Blount County corrections officer, took her gun and escaped from the detention center on Court Street in Maryville, according to a Blount County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.

Authorities started a manhunt for the teen.

French’s body was found shortly before 8:30 a.m. Saturday by a person on the greenway. An autopsy will be performed on French at the Knox County Regional Forensic Center, according to a sheriff’s office news release, which reported that it appears French died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
