Cost tax payers $8M to build, now inmate overcrowding is causing more problems

CARLSBAD, N.M. — A jail expansion project costing a New Mexico county more than $8 million is going to waste.

It’s been nearly two years since taxpayer dollars paid for a new women’s-only wing at the Eddy County Detention Cente, but it’s still not being used.

Now inmate overcrowding is causing more problems.
