DA confirms fired Pa. jail officer target of inmate sex probe

Prosecutor says a Pa. county jail officer fired last month is being investigated for allegations that he had sex with a female inmate

GREENSBURG, Pa. — A prosecutor says a western Pennsylvania county jail guard fired last month is being investigated for allegations that he had sex with a female inmate.

Westmoreland County Prison Warden John Walton tells the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that the firing and the investigation confirmed Monday by District Attorney John Peck aren’t related. The guard isn’t being identified by authorities.

But Peck says sexual assault allegations remain “under review.”

The inmate’s defense attorney, Michael Garofalo, says his client’s cell has been searched since she accused the guard, and that she’s also lost her inmate work assignment at the jail.

Walton says jail officials are not retaliating against the woman who is jailed awaiting trial on theft and conspiracy charges.

A judge has set an Aug. 21 hearing on whether to release her on bond.
